Pre-Press Checks for CTP-S Thermal Plates: Inspection and Fountain Solution

Pre-Press Checks for CTP-S Thermal Plates Inspection and fountain solution control

Before the plate goes on the cylinder, two checks prevent most on-press problems: visual inspection and fountain solution control. Two minutes of pre-press discipline saves hours of press downtime.

🔍 Visual Inspection

Inspect the plate under strong, even lighting. Look for:

  • Scratches that penetrate the aluminium layer. If the scratch reaches the base metal, the plate must be replaced. Cleaning solutions cannot fix mechanical damage.
  • Toning or discolouration in the non-image area. Light contamination may clean up, but persistent toning suggests a coating defect.
  • Incomplete imaging — missing dots, weak highlights, uneven density.

⚠️ Recurring scratch pattern? If scratches appear in the same location on every plate, check the CTP unit and plate-loading equipment for sharp edges or worn parts.

💧 Fountain Solution Check

The dampening solution is the first line of defence for the non-image area. Ensure:

Parameter Target Range
pH 4.8 – 5.5 (acid range)
Isopropanol Concentration 8–12% (if used)
Conductivity 800–1,500 μs/cm

💡 Remember: A fouled fountain solution will cause toning on any plate. Don't blame the plate for a chemistry problem.

✅ Bottom Line

Two minutes of pre-press inspection saves hours of press downtime. Visual inspection catches mechanical damage before it reaches the cylinder. Fountain solution control prevents chemistry-related toning that no plate can overcome.
